7 Ways To Squash Identity Theft

July 31, 2008

It is the scourge of our age: identity theft. Thieves learn an important part about your personal information, such as your credit card number, and they open accounts in your name and spend, spend, spend! Unfortunately, by the time you discover that you are a victim the damage is already done. Here are seven steps you can take to prevent identity theft.

1. Guard your social security number. Clerks, telephone sales people, etc. will sometimes ask for your social security number. Do not give this information out. Of course, certain government agencies require your social security number for identification purposes, but other than that no one has a "need" for your number.

2. Get a shredder. Yes, ripping papers up into little pieces can help but these pieces can also be put back together by someone determined to get information from you. Thieves resort to "dumpster diving" or "trash can trolling" to find out important information about you. Once they have it you can count on your problems beginning.

A Personal Mortgage Experience

July 31, 2008

I don’t know what the mortgage situation is around the world but here in England the mortgage industry is a constant point of debate. It used to be that everyone aspired to having a mortgage on a nice home ? you know the kind of house with enough rooms to cater for the average family with 2.4 children. I was no different myself when I first wanted to get on the first rung of the housing ladder ten years ago.

At the time I was living in a council flat (a government housing apartment) with my husband and our baby daughter. The apartment was a fairly decent size but I had gone back to work and my partner was working long hours so we thought that we wanted to stop renting and take out a mortgage to buy our own house.

I felt quite strongly that I wanted to have a mortgage so that we were not paying ‘dead money’ in rent. We looked around the area we were in for suitable house, nothing too fancy, just a comfortable two-bedroom property with a small garden for our daughter to play in safely as she grew older. We narrowed down our choices to get an idea of what size of mortgage we required. The next step was to approach a number of mortgage providers to see who offered the best rate for our needs.

The Best Way to a Farm Loan Success

July 31, 2008

The most important and difficult part in farm mortgage shopping is to compare the farm loans of different lenders. To understand better you have to know that the farm mortgage contains more than interest rates like quoted rate, points and closing costs. Now you have to understand each part, so the points equals the percents of the farm loan amount. These percents are used to make a higher rate of the farm loan. You will notice that you are able to choose a large mass of points and rates for only one loan product. So, the best solution when comparing different lenders is to compare the associate points. The final amount of the farm loan consists almost everything, title, farm loan related fees, escrow fees.

One other thing when building a farm loan is to investigate the different lenders and compare all farm loan features like the farm mortgage insurance payments, or the requirements of credit and cash, etc. A special attention should be paid to prepayment penalties and, of course to the availability of conversion option.

Looking For a Safe Investment? Try a Certificate of Deposit

July 30, 2008

If you are looking for a safe investment and you have between $100 -$1,000 to invest, you should consider a certificate of deposit or CD. When purchased through a bank, CD’s are federally insured up to $100,000.

When you invest in a certificate of deposit, you are lending your money to the bank for a set period of time at a fixed rate of interest. At the end of that time period, the bank pays you back your investment with the interest you’ve earned. The annual interest earned is reflected by the annual percentage yield or APY.

There are several details to consider before investing in a CD. First, find out when the CD will mature? Banks offer certificates of deposit with maturities ranging from 3-months to 10-years or more. Figure out how much to safely invest and how long you feel you can leave that money alone so that it earns interest. Also, make sure you get the maturity date in writing.

Second, you’ll want to know the annual percentage rate (APR) you’ll earn on your investment. Investing larger sums for longer terms usually earns the best interest. However, even a small investment can earn you higher interest than a traditional passbook savings account.

Understanding Fixed-rate Mortgages

July 30, 2008

A fixed-rate mortgage is a mortgage on which the interest rate is set for the term of the loan. Your interest rate stays the same for the term of the mortgage or for a specified period of time. Most people use a fixed-rate mortgage. In fact, about 75 percent of all home mortgages have fixed rates. The main advantage of a fixed-rate mortgage is that you always know exactly how much your mortgage payment will be, and you can plan for it.

A Fixed Rate mortgage will offer you the security of knowing that your mortgage interest rate will not change during the term of your fixed rate. For example, a lender can offer a 30-year fixed loan to a homebuyer at a 6.5% interest rate. The loan is locked in to the 6.5% interest rate, even if the market interest rate rises to 8.0%. Conversely, if the market interest rate decreases to 4.5%, you will continue to pay the 6.5% interest rate. A Fixed-Rate Mortgage applies the same interest rate toward monthly loan payments for the life of the loan.

Is There Something Called a Bad Credit Credit Card?

July 30, 2008

Is there something out there called a bad credit credit card? Well, when a bank or Credit company such as Bank of America, Washington Mutual or Chase receive an application from you, they use a statistical system to determine whether or not to grant credit to you by assigning numerical scores to various characteristics related to creditworthiness. This means the creditor’s measure of your past and future ability and willingness to repay your debts. This system is based on your credit history, which is a record of how you have borrowed and repaid debts. If this record shows late payments, skipping payments, exceeding card limits or declaring bankruptcy you are considered a person with “bad credit”.

Then you’re condemned, you’re hopeless.. Nobody will ever lend you money or give you a credit card anymore, you may think but then you should think again. Even people with horrible credit histories who have been in a financial mess because of previous debt can get credit card offers. So, the answer to the question I asked in the beginning of this article is “Yes”: You can get a secured or prepaid credit card.

FREE Credit Report Offer - Careful, It Might Carry Hidden Charges

July 29, 2008

FREE credit checks or free credit reports. What are they all about? Why every second company on the Net is offering you a free credit report? Are they all suddenly moved into a charity business?

Don’t worry about their finances. Start worrying about yours. They are offering you a FREE Credit report as a bonus. Their main offer is something else - they want to sell you “credit check monitoring services”. They claim they are going to protect you from identity theft.

In order to do that, they first ask you about all the details about your credit card and your bank accounts. Talk about a cat watching over cream distributions.

Their first move is to charge you for their services. Hold on, you say, I didn’t order anything from them. Yes, that is correct. Almost. Remember, at the bottom of their page they wrote in very small letters that if you don’t cancel their services, they are going to provide them.

And provide they will. First they are going to charge your credit card between $80 and $120, sometimes more. And we are not talking about some fly-by-night operations.

Finding the Best Homeowner Loans for Your Money

July 29, 2008

Looking for the best homeowner loans can be stressful, especially when there are so many different lender options to choose from.

Banks, finance companies, and online services all claim to offer the best homeowner loans? which one should you choose?

The answer can depend upon what you’re wanting out of a loan, what past business relationship you have with the lender in question, and the amount of equity that you have in your house to use as collateral for the loan.

Each type of lender has its own criteria for offering the best homeowner loans, but as long as you have enough equity you should be able to find a loan regardless of your credit history.

Bank loans

When looking for the best homeowner loans at local banks, you should always start with the bank or banks that you hold personal accounts with. Banking is a business, and just like any business your bank will love your repeated patronage.

Banks which you’ve had good experiences with in the past are much more likely to give you lower interest rates and better loan terms? and the lower the rates and the better the terms are, then the more likely you are to go with that bank for their best homeowner loans.

Two Ways To Debt Relief

July 28, 2008

There are many debt relief programs out there both off line and online. Sometimes it can be difficult to chose one from the other. To make a reasonable choice, you need to know

  • your specific debt problem for example student loan debt, credit card debt or several small loans with high interest rate, which in it’s turn defines
